SEOUL -- SK On, a
leading global battery and trading company, today announced it will showcase
its expanded battery portfolio at InterBattery 2025, highlighting its ability
to meet diverse market needs.
Under the theme
“Dream Onward to the Future,” SK On will take part in InterBattery 2025, South
Korea’s largest battery exhibition set to take place from March 5-7 at COEX in
Seoul, to showcase products and technologies that can drive current and future
industry trends.
This year, SK On,
part of South Korea’s SK Group, will showcase all three types of battery form
factors – pouch, prismatic and cylindrical – to emphasize its technological
prowess and ability to meet diverse customer demands.
This is the first
time that SK On, a renowned industry leader in high-nickel pouch batteries, is
showcasing a mockup of its cylindrical battery at an exhibition. Having
completed its pilot facility in the second half of last year, the battery manufacturer
has been accelerating its research and development efforts on cylindrical
batteries.
As for prismatic
batteries, SK On is adding a top-tab prismatic cell to its exhibit collection,
in addition to the side-tab prismatic cell introduced last year. The company
will also showcase its Z-Folding stacking and fast charging solutions, applied
to prismatic cells.
High-voltage
mid-nickel cell to be exhibited for the first time
Aligning with changes
in market trends, SK On will also present products with different chemistries.
In particular, SK On will unveil its high-voltage mid-nickel battery for the
first time, offering competitive pricing, enhanced performance, long lifespan,
and improved safety.
Mid-nickel batteries
refer to batteries with a nickel content of 50-70% in the NCM cathode material.
They are recognized for offering a balanced combination of high energy density,
similar to high-nickel batteries, and the price competitiveness and thermal
stability of LFP batteries. This makes them well-suited to current market
trends that prioritize cost-effectiveness.
The pouch-type
high-voltage mid-nickel battery presented by SK On reduces the costly nickel
and cobalt content to secure price competitiveness, while leveraging high
voltage to enhance energy density.
Additionally, SK On's
various technologies, including the use of electrolyte additives that protect
the cathode interface, single-crystal active materials, and doping solutions
that stabilize the electrode structure, enhance the stability and lifespan of
the mid-nickel battery, further boosting its market appeal.
SK On will also
showcase its latest technologies related to battery safety.
At the exhibition, SK
On will introduce its next-generation wireless battery management system (BMS)
that requires no wiring or cables. The system features wireless chips attached
to the battery cell tabs, which collect data and transmit it wirelessly to the
BMS via the module's antenna.
Immersion cooling
technology, a result of collaboration between SK On and SK Enmove, can also be
explored at this exhibition.
Immersion cooling
technology is different from conventional methods that cool only the bottom of
battery cells. It involves submerging the entire battery cell in special
thermal fluids to effectively dissipate heat. It enhances
cooling performance, enabling fast charging, while also effectively improving
fire safety.
Five exhibition zones to welcome visitors
SK On's
exhibition theme, 'Dream Onward to the Future,' reflects its ambition as a
global top-tier battery company, continuously advancing toward a better future
through innovation and bold aspiration.
SK On has organized
its exhibition into five distinct zones.
At the main entrance,
the 'Powered Cube' will immediately capture visitors' attention. Its LED
display will showcase a video highlighting the future of EVs and
sustainability.
Passing by the
Powered Cube and entering the exhibition, visitors will encounter the first
zone, Battery Performance. In this zone, Hyundai Motor’s flagship EV, the Ioniq
9, equipped with SK On's Advanced SF battery, is on display, introducing the
power of SK On's battery through its V2L (Vehicle to Load) functionality. SK
On’s key awards, including the Edison Awards, will also be showcased alongside
various battery cells.
The second zone,
Battery History, presents a chronicle of SK's battery development, from Yukong
in 1982 to the post-establishment era of SK On in 2021.
In the third zone,
Battery Roadmap, visitors can explore SK On's diversified battery portfolio.
The display includes pouch, prismatic, and cylindrical cells, including
high-voltage mid-nickel battery and long-life LFP battery.
In the fourth zone,
Battery Safety, visitors can explore the next-generation wireless BMS and
immersion cooling technology showcased through a model of a vehicle's
underside. The upgraded “S-Pack+” with SK On's Cell-to-Pack(CTP) technology
will also be on display.
The S-Pack+, a CTP
format that integrates the module functions into the pack, offers cost
reduction through simplified manufacturing processes and optimized product
design, resulting in high marketability. Additionally, it features
significantly enhanced safety, with improved electrical insulation, a structure
designed to discharge gas and dust, and the application of insulation
technology.
The final exhibition
zone, Dream Technology, located behind the Powered Cube, showcases SK On’s
next-generation battery technologies. It features the dry process, which
eliminates the need for solvents in the mixing process, significantly reducing
facility investment and operating costs. In addition, SK On’s polymer-oxide
composite and sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries will be on display. "SK On's
strategies for diversifying battery form factors and chemistries, along with
its innovative technologies in response to global EV market trends, can be
explored at InterBattery 2025,” a SK On official said. “SK On will continue to
strengthen its R&D capabilities and build a product portfolio that meets
customer needs.” [END]
