SK On is making its presence at CES for three consecutive years,
boasting its electric vehicle (EV) battery technologies at CES 2024 from
January 9-12 in Las Vegas. This year at CES, SK is exhibiting an interactive amusement park called “SK Wonderland” with its member companies. SK On is boasting its
advanced battery technologies through one of the attractions called ‘Dancing
Car’ at the booth. The Dancing Car, an electric car attached to robot arms,
will demonstrate the transformation of an automobile to a high-performance EV
in a five-minute video. Designed with an eye-catching display and elements, the
Dancing Car will help visitors better understand how EV batteries are placed at the bottom of the car. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore SK On’s world-class
technologies, including Z-folding, S-Pack, and
high-speed charging technology, as well as its flagship product, the
high-performance high-nickel battery NCM9+. The NCM9+ battery is SK On’s one of
the major products that continues to set global records, winning the Innovation
Awards at CES 2022 and 2023. The NCM9+ battery incorporates SK On’s Z-folding technique, which
ensures enhanced safety. Z-folding evenly stacks the anodes and cathodes
between separators in a zigzag manner and helps improve the safety of
high-nickel batteries. SK On boasts fast and precise manufacturing capabilities
with its third-generation Z-folding technique, which has improved productivity
by 2.3 times than the first generation. EVs, in general, feature batteries in the form of a pack, which is a combination of battery modules composed of cells. The Dancing Car at the booth
features SK On’s S-Pack, which uses the Cell-to-Pack (CTP) technology that
minimizes the number of modules needed. The company’s ultimate goal is to
eliminate modules and connect cells directly to the pack. By installing more
cells instead of modules, the battery pack’s driving range will increase while
cutting down manufacturing costs. The S-PACK is known for its high safety,
preventing the spread of heat in the entire battery pack in case of a fire. The Dancing Car also demonstrates SK On’s high-speed charging
technology, getting rapidly recharged up to 80% in just 18 minutes with its special
coating technology. According to SNE Research, the usage of SK On EV batteries in the
global market ranked fifth last year in the January-October period. With continuous
growth and innovation, SK On secured the No.1 position in Fortune’s “Change the
World” list last year. Also, the company won the Best of Innovation in the
“Embedded Technologies” and Honoree in the “Vehicle Tech & Advanced
Mobility” categories at the CES 2023 Innovation Awards.
